DOUBLE NEGATIVE MAKES BEAUTIFUL MUSIC FOR THE SOLOIST
The Soloist, the new film by Joe Wright, (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) opens in the US today.
Double Negative and VFX Supervisor, John Moffatt, were approached by Wright, whom they had worked with on Atonement, to create a sequence where musical genius, Ayers (Jamie Foxx) visualises sound as colour.
Initially, it was thought that a digital route would be followed, but after Moffatt viewed rushes that cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey had shot, using an anamorphic lens to create the film's look, it was decided that a digital approach would be too much in contrast to the feel of the rest of the film. Instead a simple approach was employed, using multi coloured light, crystals and even jam jars to create mesmerising prismatic effects.
The Soloist opens in the US on April 24th and in the UK on September 11th, 2009.
